History of the Tresku building

The Tresku building is placed between Toledo Avenue and Extremadura Avenue. Tresku name comes from (TRES CU)ñados (three brothres in law, in Spanish).

The main problem with this building has been to get an agreement with the different owners. Tresku’s building has been divided in three parts, so here comes a new problem with the different owners. Before the building was divided, a full transformation of all the building was needed. The wood windows were reformed for an aluminum frame; the outside stained glass, the main entrance, the hall, stairs and lifts were also remodeled.

There are many rumours about this building. The main rumour is about the building having an illness called “aluminosis”, that is, a degeneration of cement used in construction. 40 years ago, a special product was used in the cement to get it to dry quicker. Years later, architects found several problems with cements dried with these product. That caused little flakes that made the cements and materials weaker.

Searching about this bulding in Internet, we found a single opinión in the web: “If this bulding has an illness, the City Council would have done a record about it. As you can see, there is no record for this building. So we can´t say that this is a ruined bulding. If there is any questions about this building, you only need to go to the City Council”

Twenty years ago there was a small business. A successful cafetería, called “Tresku”. It was opened for many years, until inside the building start to appear internal fractures caused by the aluminosis. After that, the building was closed to undergo a huge reform.

At present time, Tresku building is still close, even after the reform. We managed to get the contact info of the reformer, and he kindly agreed to talk with us about this building.

Mr. Restituto (Tresku’s Architect): “Tresku building has been reformed and now can be used as flats. Every floor can support 500 kg per square metre but is not possible to be used for shops or business, unless a more severe transformation is carried out. El Corte Ingles department store wanted to buy the building but eventually discarded it.”
